Volunteer!

Nowhere has no paid staff. Every single person that makes this event happen is a volunteer. That means the event belongs to all of us, and it's up to us to make it happen. We call it a do-ocracy.
Some people give their time year-round, while others volunteer just for the duration of the event. We have work for you right now if you're up for it, no matter where you're located. Some people lead whole projects, and others give a little bit to many projects. No matter what your skills or how much time you can spare, we have something you can do!
Make art, pound nails, cook stew, sew costumes, dig ditches, geek out over IT, logisticise logistics, bring hot workers cold beer, translate newsletters, build fantastic structures, meet amazing people, feel like Nowhere belongs to you!
How volunteering works
Volunteers contact us and let us know about their skills and interests. We match them up with projects. Some of these projects start long before the event and involve emailing, planning, communicating and co-ordinating. Some projects involve meetings and activities in Spain or London, and others can be done from anywhere over the internet. Volunteers arrive on site early and stay after for strike/cleanup.
The volunteers co-ordinator keeps track of all volunteers and ongoing projects and makes sure people-power is well managed to get all the projects done. Some volunteers stay mostly on one big project, while others work on many projects in succession. We try to make sure everyone works on their preferred projects, but all volunteers are expected to be flexible.
All volunteers are invited to eat with Werkhaus (the crew kitchen) and are free to camp on their own or with a barrio (large camp). Werkhaus has a lounge area for eating and chilling. Volunteers work hard all day, and play hard (or pass out) all siesta and evening.
Keep in mind: Everyone buys a ticket, no exceptions. Only authorised volunteers are allowed on site before the event officially starts. All volunteers are expected to devote their time to Werkhaus projects (except for breaks, siestas, at night, meals etc). All volunteers take their turn helping on kitchen duty.
Volunteering timeline
February to late June: pre-event planning and organisation
Individuals and teams start to combine. Preparing and sourcing materials for projects. Purchasing, ordering, emails and designing. Teams meet up and work on practical projects such as décor or emergency response training.
Late June to event start: set-up on site
Turning all our plans into a creative and inspiring home. Building everything from toilets to multi-story structures. Sorting out tools, purchasing supplies, keeping the power flowing, running our kitchen, stocking drink coolers and just generally taking care of workers in the hot sun.
Ensuring the wellbeing and optimum enjoyment of all participants and a smooth-running event. Working the gate, first aid and welfare and the info desk. Lending a hand when unforeseen eventualities occur (and they always do!)
12 July until the job's done: post-event
Nowhere is a committed Leave No Trace event so we spend days after the event clearing the last of the remnants, removing accidentally dropped bits and bobs, aka MOOP (matter out of place) and restoring our temporary home to its previous state for another year
Projects and roles
Please don't be intimidated by the amount of projects here, this list is meant to inspire you! You can try something new or offer your experience and existing skills. You can take a small role or a lead role. It's all up to you.
Art
What sort of celebration of art would we be without this team? Liaising, facilitating, co-ordinating and creating. Granting grants and supporting artists.
Survival guide, the website, newsletters, spreading the message.
Nowhere’s very own dressing up box. We've got crates of outfits but help is needed setting up the camp
Graphic designers, illustrators, painters etc to help with making all the materials (digital and analog) of Nowhere works of art
An international network for those interested in learning about Nowhere and cool events happening within their country.
The event is our canvas. Create it, organise it, hang it, make it beautiful.

Co-ordinate live performances, events, DJs, workshops and produce a 'what where when' guide at Nowhere.
The crew that takes care of our hard workers in the hot sun. Water, beer, sunscreen, backrubs etc.
The source of our daily newspaper, volunteering info, information and a li'l gossip. Planning and sourcing the necessary info.
Website, mailing list, servers, bits, bytes – if you know why 'sudo make me a sandwich' is funny, we want to hear from you.
Like the idea of moving tonnes of wood between remote sites in a foreign country? Compiling materials' orders and getting it all there. Vehicles, scaffolding, power tools, all the big toys.
Generators, sound and visual equipment, keeping freezers running in the desert and chopsaws chopping. Geek out and light this town!
Translations
The wesite, survival guide and newsletters are all translated into as many languages as we have translators.
