Nowhere 2012’s volunteer roles

Nowhere is organised entirely by volunteers. That means everything from building the Middle of Nowhere to designing the website to digging the toilets to organising ice deliveries is done by people just like you.

There are loads of volunteer shifts that need to be filled during the festival, from welcoming people as they arrive to helping in our information desk (NoInfo) to helping with our welfare/medical teams. We also have pre-event roles like helping with building or 'fluffing' (making sure everyone is well looked after with water, sunscreen etc) and post-event roles like making sure we leave no trace and everything gets packed safely away in storage. There are even year-round roles like helping with the website!

We urgently need help with the following volunteer roles – if you’re up for one of these roles, then get in touch using the email addresses listed below for each vacancy…

If you are volunteering for a role that needs to you arrive onsite early, you also need to fill in our pre-event volunteers form

Greeters/Gate shifts

We need people to join our amazing Gate and Greeters crews to help welcome everyone onsite. Each shift is six hours, you work in teams, and you get fed and watered while on shift from the lovely Werkhaus kitchen. No special skill or knowledge is needed, so it’s a great way to volunteer if this is your first Nowhere. We’re especially keen to hear from people who speak several languages so we can greet people in their mother tongue if possible, although languages are not essential, just lots of enthusiasm!

Which crew is right for you? Well…

The Gate crew operates from a few days before the festival starts until a day after it ends, in order to make sure everyone enters and exits the festival site safely. They check tickets and relay any official information.

The Greeters give folk a proper dusty Nowhere welcome, helping them make the all-important transition from Somewhere to Nowhere.

Malfare (our medical/welfare team)

Exciting things are happening with Malfare this year. We’re regrouping, restructuring and getting ready to meet the growing and shifting demands of Nowhere. Malfare’s focus this year will be on participants’ general welfare, and helping to address safety concerns, mediate disputes and resolve conflicts when they cannot be resolved by the people involved.

Malfare No-Mads

We’ve redefined the Malfare volunteer role this year – no more (just) sitting around in the hot tent, this year you get to be a nomad! Nowhere + Malfare + Nomad = No-Mad! What a better way to enjoy the event, be social and meet people while still being on duty? We’re looking for people for:

  • 6-hour shifts
  • site-patrols, interacting with participants, keeping a gentle eye out for safety and welfare matters
  • mediation and conflict resolution, together with the Malfare Shift Lead
  • training is provided so no previous experience needed, but any applicable skills always welcome!(nurses or other medical experience, counsellors/therapists, mediators, coaches, or just plain good with people!)
  • different languages very welcome! (but not required)
  • No-Mad kits and uniform provided

Onsite Bus Co-ordinator

With the return of our Nowhere bus service this year, organised by the wonderful Carlos, we need someone to be our Onsite Bus Co-ordinator.

You will:

  • make sure the bus times are advertised at No Info (our onsite information desk)

  • direct people to the buses as they leave the site

  • take fares for any passengers who haven’t pre-booked tickets
