Role to be filled

Cantina Lead(s)

year round and/or on site

What’s Cantina? This is where volunteers go to get their meal while working their shifts! So Cantina provides food to individuals onsite during the event including setup and strike.

[On Site] Cantina Lead

PURPOSE/Summary:

Like the sound of getting involved to manage Cantina but can’t commit to a year-round role? Why not be one of our On-site cantina leads to provide assistance to our year-round team. Whichever period you sign up for (Build, event or Strike) your role will likely begin in May or very early June pre-event to meet with the year round leads from your team and understand what is needed from you on site.

You will need to understand all the plans for Cantina that have been created by the year-round team and be prepared to deal with any issues that may arise (with help from meta-leads). You will help to manage a team of volunteers to follow planned recipes and cook fantastic food for up to 150 people!

Tasks and time commitment

Whichever period you choose, you will need to share shifts with your team for the whole time – this means staying for Build or Strike if you have committed to this. You will have an onsite co-lead, plus at least one year-round lead to help. You will be involved in some of the later stages of planning for the event before you come on site and will help to evaluate and feedback what went well/could be improved after Nowhere has finished.

These are just some of the tasks you and your co-lead will be getting involved in:

[Year Round] Cantina Lead

Purpose/Summary

You will be involved in the planning and organization of Cantina for Nowhere with the cantina team for either build, event or strike.

This role is year round, which means there will be planning tasks to complete with your team each week in the months (January-June) leading up to Nowhere.

The team will split into 3 sub-teams; Build, Event and Strike. Each team will plan and organize Cantina for their ‘period’ and will coordinate with the other Cantina leads and meta-leads. At least 1 of the leads from each team should have solid experience of cooking for lots of people regularly. We require a team of at least 6 people.

Tasks and Time Commitment

This is a year-round role, which means we need your help to plan, deliver and evaluate Cantina. As the event gets closer, there will be more tasks to do for each team.

One person from each team will need to be able to be on-site for the shifts in that period (build and strike!) while the other part of the team could help remotely or also be on site.

Here’s an example of some of the tasks you’ll be helping with throughout the year:

Pre-Event January-February

  • Exchange information about how Cantina works with Leads and Meta-Leads (online meetings)
  • Choose food providers for the food you want to cook (with help from ML)
  • Set up FIST (our online volunteer management platform) with the shifts and numbers of volunteers you need (with guidance)
  • Participate in any planning meetings relevant to your role.

Pre-Event March-April

  • Keep an eye on FIST to make sure volunteers are signing up to build, event and strike shifts
  • Communicate with your MetaLead and the Comms team about recruitment needs /post on social media to advertise roles
  • Write the menus, recipes and kitchen bible (with guidance from MLs)
  • Create shopping list (based on planned recipes and budget)

Pre-Event May-Build

  • Keep an eye on FIST to make sure volunteers are signing up to shifts
  • Work with Comms and MLs to increase the promotion of shifts available to try and get any gaps filled
  • Organize the orders and deliveries of food to onsite for your team’s time period (with guidance)
  • Coordinate with the other parts of the team and offer help if needed
  • Contact the kitchen crew and onsite leads who will be on site and invite them to an induction to explain how Cantina works!

During Setup, Event & Strike

  • Build team – it’s your time to shine! Get your luggage and utensils ready! Manage your crew to deliver fantastic food for the volunteers, deal with any problems that arise (with help from ML)
  • Event time – take handover from build crew, communicate any recruitment gaps with Werkhaus and NoInfo (for event time sign ups). Manage your crew to deliver fantastic food.
  • Strike – take handover from event time crew near to end of event, communicate any recruitment gaps to NoInfo ASAP. Manage your crew to deliver fantastic food.
  • All: Participate in any on-site meetings relevant to your role
  • All: Carry out any site management shifts according to agreed rota
